Mitochondria
THE MITOCHONDRIA IS THE POWERHOUSE OF THE CELL. The mitochondria is found in large quantities in most cells. The biochemical processes of cellular respiration and energy production occur in the mitochondria. It also has a double membrane, with the inner layer folded inward to form layers, or cristae. The matrix is located inside the inner membrane. Cellular respiration occurs when enzymes in the matrix take organic chemicals and chemically digest them. Proteins embedded in the inner membrane and enzymes in the citric acid cycle release water and carbon dioxide from the breakdown of oxygen and glucose. The mitochondria is the only place in the cell where oxygen is reduced and broken down into water
